Personal data visualization

I’m a big fan of data visualizations, however I find there are many that I don’t particularly care about or rather aren’t very relevant to my interests.  Not to stay they aren’t amazing pieces of art but I typically just digest and move on.  This is probably a common behavior as there are not a lot of people who really do not need to know about mapping Android activation worldwide or global alcohol consumption, while the beauty and work that goes into building them is appreciated.

Although, what any data narcissist can get behind is information about themselves.  There are countless apps and websites that allow you to visualize your data.  Here are two examples that I think do a great job at looking at very specific aspects of personal data.

RescueTime – Tracks your daily productivity.

Fizz - Visualizes the people you follow on twitter.

At a glance, with both of these services, you get an interesting story that provides insight into your behavior and the behavior of the people around you (who you follow).  They allow you to make decisions based on actual data versus making assumptions on your (in this case) productivity and twitter behavior.

I believe that is where the power lies in these types of personal data visualizations, providing users with real data for daily behavior that we make assumptions about.  One can easily make the jump to apps that aggregate the exercise you get each day, amount of TV watched, calories consumed, etc.

In a world where soon everything we do will be a data point (a scary thought), discretion and individual control are a necessity that can lead to an invaluable wealth of personal information.
